Felicity Slevin – The Psychology of Chronic Pain

Felicity Slevin is a local psychologist who runs chronic pain programs using education as a treatment to effectively reduce pain. They work towards increasing meaningful functioning and diminishing fear and catastrophising to reduce pain. Their program was designed around Moseley and Butler’s excellent book – Explaining Pain. These programs have been shown to reduce pain just as effectively as pharmacological analgesia.

Key components of understanding chronic pain:

  • We can have pain without tissue damage, and damage without pain.
  • You might be sore but it can still be safe to move.
  • If the mind hurts, the body hurts too (and vice versa), so it is important to address mental wellbeing too.
